During the last decade of the Hundred
Years War, Benoît Lescarde's wayward half-brother
Jánté was involved in unimaginable sadism
and black magic while his brother was defending his
country against the English. At some point during
his exploits however, Jánté Lescarde
found a ritual tucked away in the ancient library
of one of his companions that promised him both eternal
life, and his wildest dreams fulfilled. The ritual
required a year and a day to perform, and Jánté
quickly locked himself away from the world and began
to work the magicks that would been his doom.
In fact, what he had found was a ritual that would
fuse his soul with that of an Unbound Yugtuhul and
halt the process of Corruption that otherwise forced
such creatures from one host to the next. The ritual
had been created by the Benedera centuries before
in the hope that, in combining the soul of a mortal
with that of the Yugtuhul that both could be destroyed
more easily. The ritual was a disaster, and all but
and handful of the transcriptions were destroyed before
they had the chance to wreak any further havoc. In
fact, the magick did little to aid in the destruction
of the Yugtuhul as the host's body itself slowly became
a Phylactery over the space of a decade and thereafter
far harder to destroy.
A year later, Jánté stepped out of the
abandoned mansion he had imprisoned himself in a different
man. Half his former self, half Ochelum, and stuck
half-way through a process of decay. It was then that
Benoît returned to find what his brother had
become. Unable to take Jánté's life,
even while he was still weak from the transformation,
Jánté escaped and only resurfaced in
the city of New London hundreds of years later. Here,
he has taken it upon himself to become his brother's
personal tormentor, although, as Benoît had
discovered centuries before, something of his former
self prevents him from raising his hand to kill him.
Instead, the two share an often strained relationship
and more often than not avoid one another entirely.
And so, while Benoît busied himself helping
the city's needy, Jánté opened up the
city's only alternative nightclub, Aquitaine, offering
a number of perverse and twisted services those who
desired them, and giving the city's unliving a place
to hunt and haunt unmolested.
Rarely stepping outside the confines
of his nightclub, Jánté is able to maintain
his somewhat eccentric appearance unmolested. Wearing
plenty of makeup to cover his withered skin and dressed
in everything from straight-jackets to plastic and
leather to tartan miniskirts, he's usually to be found
on the balcony of the club, his brassy copper hair
brushed across milky blue eyes that scan the floor
continually, watching the depravation that goes on
inside Aquitaine's walls.
