Hunter's Kiss - Rasputina |
It’s one of those curious twists
of history that, over the winding passage of New London’s
history, the city has ended up with both a Sheriff,
and a Chief of Police. As the city grew and its law
enforcement needs became ever more complicated, sub-districts
and departments budded and grew, the number of police
swelled and a Chief of Police was appointed to make
sure it all ran smoothly. But somewhere along the
line, it seems that no one quite had the heart to
disband the Sheriff’s office or the Sheriff
himself. These days, the Sheriff is responsible for
running the jail and holding cells in the police station,
liasing with the courts and his department runs a
number of local patrols around the residential and
business areas, as well as a relatively new initiative
trying to maintain order and civility in the docklands
area.
The current Sheriff is Dick Theroux, who took over
the role when his father retired around 20 years ago.
Sadly, his father died shortly after, and now watches
his son from the –cemetery name here-. Dick
is, by all accounts, a handsome man for his age. His
skin has been turned a golden colour by the sun he
seems to like so much, his hair is long enough to
be shaggy, and he’s the sort of person who looks
good in the sort of clothes that outsiders think a
New Londoner should wear. He’s also not a person
who seems to like paperwork overly much. Instead,
he spends his time walking around the homes and businesses
his men are responsible for, talking to the people,
passing the time and presenting a human, available
and sympathetic face to the Sheriff’s department,
and the police as a whole. Most of the long term residents
of New London know that if they have a problem –
with a neighbour, a cat, a missing child – they
can mention it to Dick and, sooner or later, it’ll
get sorted. It’s always so much easier to tell
a friend than some stranger down the end of a phone
line, after all.
