Trouble spilled out onto the streets of New London's Claireau Quarter
last night as a group of around fifty people left one of the bars at
around midnight.
Just before this time, Alabama-based band 'Dancing Near Dark' had been
playing at The 12 Bar, and had worked the crowd up into a frenzy. As
the set came to an end, the two musicians were mobbed and forced to
flee the bar after the crowd that had been listening to them turned on
them like the whole world had stepped back into the 1960's and the
Beatles had just walked in and churned out a few songs.
Although this reporter wasn't on site for the performance, we are
reliably informed that the band were spectacular, and that it was this
spectacular performance that spurred the crowd into action.
Several people were injured when the frenzied crowd broke onto the
street, witnesses report total chaos as people tried to alternately
provoke and diffuse the crowd, with one man emptying the bars takings
for the night and throwing handfuls of cash into the air.
The situation didn't come to an end until early in the morning, when
police stepped in to contain the last few groups of people that had
taken their aggression out onto the street and started causing trouble.
It's reported that a member of the band was injured in the trouble, but
at the time of this report, no representative of the band could be
found to comment on the situation.
