The
City Limits
The area immediately surrounding New
London is dominated by the Louisiana swampland. Highway
18, the great River Road, runs along the bank of the
Mississippi clean through the centre of New London,
and stretches out to the northwest and southeast running
through the heart of plantation country. Highway 405
runs along the other side of the river just outside
the Hollowmarsh Nature reserve, and I-10 and the Louisiana
Regional Airport are located in Gonzales just to the
north of the city for access to the rest of the country.
In the few square miles surrounding
New London, you can find the captivating beauty of
the Hollowmarsh Reserve with its Native American history
and rich wildlife, Fountaine House, one of the finest
Greek-revival plantation houses in the State, and
the ICM Chemical Processing Plant, one of the biggest
providers of employment in the city.
Also just outside the city is the
abandoned district/town of Mal Gardé which,
while unknown to most people that visit the city,
provides a disconcerting glimpse back into New London’s
past almost perfectly preserved in the marshland.
Located in the heart of Ascension
County, the small towns and villages around the city
carry all the haunting charm of New London on a smaller
scale, with the nearest cites being New Orleans, forty-five
minutes drive to the southeast, and Baton Rouge, half
an hours drive to the northwest.
