In
New London, the Court of Night holds almost all the
strings of power in the supernatural world, and a
lot in the mortal world. In the manor of most large,
authoritative bodies, what it seeks to achieve above
all is a harmonious status quo which allows it to
pursue its own goals and not have to worry excessively
about threats to its power, either internal or external.
Most people sit at the bottom of its
power structure, the serfs and peasants, mostly unaware
of the machinations going on above them and simply
trying to run their own lives. And, so long as they
don’t upset too many people, there are more
or less allowed to do so. Those who live long enough
find themselves embroiled in the Court, either by
choice, by force, or by unfortunate turn of circumstance.
There are, of course, some who exist
outside the Court, but they are few and far between.
Mostly they head small cults, hide away in their libraries,
or eek out an existence that it’s not worth
the Court’s time to take an interest in. Although
heavies with lead pipes don’t tend to turn up
at the doors of those who oppose the Court, it is
significant that there has been no major threat to
its authority throughout its history. |
